How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade is worth a number of grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on). Multiply each class's grade points by its credits, add them all up, then divide by the total number of credits.
Example: an A in a 4-credit class (16 points) plus a B+ in a 3-credit class (9.9 points) = 25.9 points ÷ 7 credits = 3.70 GPA.

Some schools give A+ a value of 4.3 or use a different scale. Always check your school's handbook for the official policy.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good GPA?
A 3.0 (B average) is generally seen as good, 3.5 and above is strong, and 3.7+ is excellent. Competitive colleges and scholarships often look for 3.5 or higher.
What is the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?
Semester (term) GPA covers only the classes you took in one term. Cumulative GPA covers every class you have taken so far, weighted by credits.
Do pass/fail classes count toward GPA?
Usually not. Pass/fail (or credit/no credit) classes earn credits but no grade points, so leave them out of this calculator.
Can I use this for UK, Canadian or Australian grades?
This calculator uses the US 4.0 scale. Canadian schools often use a similar 4.0 or 4.3 scale. UK degree classifications and the Australian 7-point GPA use different systems.
